Where Do You Start?
So you’re starting a new business, or you have a product to sell. You need a website, but you have no idea where to start. You’ve heard about different tools that you can use to build a site, but what one is right for you?
Well, I am here to answer all of those questions and more. This is the only article you will need to read about getting your business up and running with a new website.
Site Builders
Should you use a drag and drop website builder and do it yourself?
Only if you’re starting something with a small budget and need to make many updates on your own. In reality, by the time you pay for your domain name, hosting, and email, you could be paying more than just hiring a professional to put everything together for you.
What’s worse – your site will not look professional, and neither will your business.
HTML5 and CSS3
If you are just using HTML5 and CSS3 for your website, you are basically coding it out by hand. I am a huge fan of this method. These sites load fast and appear correctly on most devices.
Technically HTML is not a programming language but a markup language. In terms of computer programming, HTML is pretty easy to work with.
Can you learn HTML5 and code you own site by hand? Yes. But I could learn how to cook an amazing steak, but it doesn’t mean I’m not going to visit restaurants anymore. Unless you are going in business to be a web designer, this is not the best way to spend your time.
What about CCS?
Cascading Style Sheets work hand in hand with the HTML5 file to format and style the appearance of the site.
What’s Your Best Solution?
Work with a professional who will help you:
1. Buy a domain name
2. Get a web hosting account,
3. Install WordPress for your site.
Domain Names
For a domain name I recommend using www.namecheap.com.
What domain name should I get?
For a traditional business, I still recommend getting a “.com” domain name. However, there are many other extensions that are acceptable to use. With the major increase in mobile web traffic, domains aren’t even as noticable. I will sometimes use “.site” or “.club” on my “just for fun” projects. Or “.mba” for my personal site.
Does my domain name affect SEO?
Yes, and it can be extremely important. People have different opinions on this. It’s pretty clear having your keywords in your URL will help rankings.
Web Hosting
For hosting you could use wpengine.com, bluehost, Host Gator, many different options. Truth is, most of them are owned by about 4 different companies.
Why WordPress?
WordPress is an amazing website platform that makes it easy for you to add content in the future. Once your site is built on WordPress, it can be rather easy to add articles and blog post. In addition, apps such as WooCommerce allow you to sell products from a site built on WordPress.
What about ClickFunnels?
Better questions is why are you worried about Clickfunnels? I’m kidding, it’s great for what it does, building sales funnels, but it will cost you a minimum or about $1,180 a year.
What About Shopify?
Shopify is a great solution for someone selling products online, that is constantly adding new products to their store.
